Arrival of the Littorine

The first two Littorine arrived in Massawa in 1935.  The above pictures shows A60, the first of the two, being unloaded.

The second set of Littorine arrived in Massawa on May 5, 1936.  These were numbers A62 through A70.

The above sequence are frames from a Luce Newsreel commemorating the arrival of the Littorine in Massawa.  The video came from Renato Gaudio.  He also provided material from the jacket.  The statement on this sequence was:

• Africa orientale; l'arrivo delle Littorine al porto di Massaua
5 maggio 1936. Dalla primavera del 1936 giungono a Massaua nove Littorine costruite dalla Fiat di Torino, numerate da A 62 (che si vede chiaramente nel filmato) ad A 70, di rodiggio 1A-A1. Le unità dalla 62 alla 67 erano atte al servizio viaggiatori con 32 posti a sedere, mentre dalla 68 alla 70 erano allestite come furgoni, di cui 2 assegnati al Genio Ferrovieri. Erano la versione a scartamento ridotto (950mm) delle Aln 556 Fiat di cui adottavano gli stessi motori Diesel 356 C. tarati a 85 kW. La velocità massima era di 68 km/h. Gli interni erano coibentati dalle alte temperature esterne in legno e agglomerati e l'imperiale era dotato di intercapedine con la lamiera protettiva esterna. Il servizio avveniva sulla Massaua-Asmara di 118 km. Il filmato le riprende durante le operazioni di sbarco e sulle banchine del porto caricate sopra pianali a carrelli manovrati da una locomotiva a vapore.

The picture (below) was provided by Renato Gaudio.  It shows the first Eritrean Littorina arriving in the mid-1930s.   It is interesting that the littorina is taller and almost as large as containers

This is probably part of the shipment in the newsreel..  This is captioned someplace as the first Littorina. . When time permits, this will be posted in an abreviated-downloaded version of the video.
