Notes

"???" indicates info will be updated. "N/A" indicates info not available.

08.10.2005: The Empire Builder was involved in a collision with a farm tractor, which the driver was killed. Due to investigation and equipment inspection, the train was delayed. It is not known if 139 was involved, no collision markings were visible. Next day's builder was delayed significantly due to bridge work on the Canadian National RR in Minnesota.

08.12.2005: The FRA inspection car, "T-16" retrofitted Amfleet arrived on the northbound today, was set out in PDX. Since it was decided by management to annull the Starlight if it arrives beyond Midnight, and it seems that they let it go to Seattle this time.

08.21.2005:  Coast Starlight, Train 14(20AUG) with AMTK 115 and 113 stalled on main line on Cuesta Grade north of San Luis Obispo when AMTK 113 shut down. Crew reported cab of the AMTK 113 was full of smoke with a probable burned traction motor. HEP had been supplied from the AMTK 113 and was lost. Crew was unable to switch HEP to AMTK 115, then shut down the computer on the 115 and attempted a cold reboot with no success; AMTK 115 then would not run at all. Union Pacific sent their San Luis Obispo helper set and brought the train back to San Luis Obispo to clear their railroad. Both AMTK 115 and 113 were set out and replaced with AMTK 455, taken from Train 775's trainset. Train 14 operated at reduced speed with the single unit to San Jose, where AMTK 159 and 510 had operated light engine from Oakland and were added.

Delay to Train 14(20) at San Luis Obispo for the engine trouble was eight hours. Other delays occurred along the way but pale by comparison. It was so late by the time it reached Emeryville that Train 6(21AUG) was delayed 40 minutes there, holding for connections that according to schedule, should have been overnight. Train 14(20) then had more HEP problems at Sacramento with 30 minutes delay. It finally was terminated at Portland.

Train 11(21) was delayed 1 1/2 hours at Klamath Falls account no rested crew off the late Train 14; a fresh crew was transported by taxicab from Sacramento.

AMTK 460 was sent light engine from Los Angeles to replace the AMTK 455 from Train 775's set. It and the AMTK 115 and 113 were planned to operate as the engine consist on Train 774(21AUG) to Los Angeles. Train 774 waited for the AMTK 460 to arrive, but when it finally did and the train was made up, there were yet more HEP and trainline problems; AMTK 115 and 113 were set out and 774 finally departed, three hours late. The AMTK 115 and 113 were finally added to Train 798, dead-in-tow, and taken to Los Angeles, with a 43 minute delay out of San Luis Obispo.

Due to equipment shortage resulting from this fiasco, Trains 582 and 595(21AUG) were completely cancelled between Los Angeles and San Diego.
