member, Railway President Bruce Shalders and General Manager Dave Newman)The
Ferrymead Railway celebrated the completion of its most ambitious restoration project to
date with the commissioning of the Ferrymead Railway Heritage Train at a gala celebration
on Saturday, 25 October. The Heritage Train is a train set made up entirely of
restored rolling stock from the 18th century.
Several hundred people including government representatives and VIPs gathered on the
lawn opposite Moorhouse Station at Ferrymead Heritage Park to see the Heritage Train roll
out for the first time. Railway members and guests were then given the opportunity
to ride the train and share afternoon tea.
The Ferrymead Railway Heritage Train is made up of locomotive D140, passenger carriage
D26, an open L wagon and guards vans F78 and 79. Each of these were meticulously
restored in the Ferrymead Railway workshop by Railway volunteers.
The event was sponsored Solid Energy New Zealand Ltd, and supported by several local
organisations including Tait Radio Communications, Hirequip Party and Events and Newstalk
ZB.
