Details of Progress Rail Services' entry into the genset market are sketchy at this time, as the Caterpillar-owned company only recently made a formal announcement with a display at the RSI Rail Technology Exhibition in Chicago on Sept. 21-24, 2008. So most of the details that we are able to present at least initially should be considered preliminary and subject to change. Not surprisingly, the locomotives will use Caterpillar C18 engines for power. They will also be fitted with Cat's ACERT emissions reduction technology. Each genset is rated at 745 horsepower. Progress' three engine genset, model PR22B, will have a total rating of 2,235 hp, while their twin engine model (PR15B?) will be rated at 1,490 hp. Those are the highest horsepower ratings in the industry thus far. The locomotives will be built on refurbished frames, with all new cabs and appliances. Extended range dynamic braking is an available option as well. The first of Progress' gensets showed up briefly in Georgia in late August and early Sept. 2007. That unit, PRSX 3802, was apparently a test bed of some sort, as the gensets sat very high on the frame, and the unit had a conventional cab. Future arrivals were spotted in March and April 2008 with higher visibility cabs and much lower hoods. Initial information is that Progress will be centering most of its genset production around a new facility in Mayfield, KY. To that end, the 3802 and 2003 both moved to the facility in mid-March 2008. The 2005 moved there in mid-April as well. Expected genset donors PRSX 2004, 2005 and 2006 (EMD GP40, GP38 and GP38AC respectively) were moved there in April and May 2008, and stripping was commenced on those units to get them ready for conversion. 2008? |
This appears to be the first completed production genset from Progress Rail. It has significantly lower hoods than any of the other gensets on the market. When photographed at Patterson, GA in early March, the unit was painted in a CP-like red, but was mostly obscured behind another unit. The unit is listed in UMLER as ex-ACWR 3669. It is reported that the unit is actually ex-HLCX 3669, as ACWR never had a unit of that number.

2008? |
Spotted incomplete in the CSX yard in Waycross, GA in March 2008. The unit has been stripped and primed, and has the new cab and short hood installed. It also appeared to have a dynamic brake enclosure in place, but no gensets when photographed. Photographed again in western Kentucky the following week wearing the number 2003. UMLER shows unit as ex-HLCX 3630 (EMD GP38).

2008? |
Not confirmed as genset conversion as of yet. Derelect unit missing parts moved toward Mayfield, KY, arriving in early May. UMLER says unit is ex-HATX 401 (EMD GP40). Sighted in Sept. 2008 in Mayfield stripped down to frame and trucks.

2008? |
Spotted incomplete on CSX out of Waycross, GA in mid-April 2008. Arrived in Mayfield in early May. The unit has been stripped and primed, and has the new cab and short hood installed. It also appeared to have a dynamic brake enclosure in place, but no gensets when photographed. Actual core unit is HLCX 3629 (EMD GP38). Listed in UMLER as ex-UP 1991, which isn't correct. That unit is PRSX 2007 below, and was already in Mayfield a few weeks before the 2005 moved.

Not confirmed to be a genset conversion yet, but believed to be genset fodder. Derelect geep, ex-CSXT 2015 (EMD GP38), moved to Mayfield, KY in April 2008 with PRSX spray painted on body. Frame and fuel tank primered. Sighted in Sept. 2008 in Mayfield stripped down to frame and trucks, with new PRLX reporting marks.

Summer 2007 |
Apparently a test bed, PRSX 3802 is former Aberdeen, Carolina & Western ACWR 3802, a GP38. It was photographed in Waycross and Patterson in late summer of 2007. Unlike the production models, the 3802 has a conventional cab (albeit apparently moved forward slightly) and taller genset units. It also had no long hood. Moved to Mayfield, Kentucky in March 2008. |
