Supporting the theme of "Moving the Mail in the 20th Century", the
Crescent Model Railroaders set up a layout at this annual international
stamp show, held in the US only once every 10 years. Other railroad
themed displays that were part of the event included items from the
Smithsonian Postal Museum related to Owney the RPO mascot, and train
memorabilia from Frank Scheer's Railway Mail Service Museum. This was the largest and longest event in which our group has ever participated. Our layout was included as part of the Youth Activities area that was sponsored by the US Postal service. With unanimous participation of the Crescent members and a few friends, the Crescent was able to keep the trains running from point A to point A for the duration of the show. We also received support for the event from Kalmbach Publishing, Scenic Express, Operation Lifesaver, Mike's Train House, Weaver Models, Atlas O, Amtrak and Trains Etc.

Our layout was packed with details and included a few special
highlights. John Z. set up his spectacular Hellgate bridge.
The 20 foot span was real attention getter. Chris Y. joined
the group and brought a new module that featured a construction scene
using Kline operating accessories.
Wes R. put his artistic flair to work to enhance our scenery, including recreating scenes from Dirk Wales book "A Lucky Dog" about Owney. Ian R. wired layout signals and set up our DCS (command system) to run a looping scene that cycled the the carnival rides on and off. |
