Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company Log Flats at Collier State Park |
Amongst the collection of logging artifacts on display at the Collier State Park Logging Museum near Chiloquin, Oregon, are three Brooks-Scanlon log flats. The cars were displayed for decades with a stiff boom McGiffert loader originally constructed for the McCloud River Railroad. Unfortunately, several decades of exposure to the elements had not been kind to the cars- the one underneath the loader was still relatively intact, but the other two were in bad shape. All wood parts of these cars, along with the McGiffert loader, burned in the Two Four Two fire in September 2020. Oregon State Parks let a contract in the summer of 2022 to fully restore the burned equipment, and the beautifully restored cars are now back on display in the museum. |

The cars had been displayed in their Brooks-Scanlon Inc. yellow paint since arriving at Collier. During the restoration one of the cars got painted into their as-delivered black Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company paint scheme. This car has been placed back in their original display location, with the former McCloud River/Kesterson McGiffert loader. |

The other two cars got painted into the later Brooks-Scanlon Inc. yellow paint scheme during their restoration. These cars are now displayed with the Big Lakes Box/Weyerhaeuser McGiffert loader. The museum did extend the display track to accommodate the cars using concrete ties, which does look a bit weird underneath historic logging equipment. |

For comparrison, following are pictures of the cars as they existed before the fire. The restoration work done on the cars is nothing less than astounding. |
