Hines Mill

The Fred Herrick Lumber Company started construction of the giant mill in Hines but was unable to complete or operate the facility before the company imploded. Edward Hines Lumber Company purchased the mill from Herrick in 1928. Hines had the resources to finish the mill, and it cut its first log on 27 January 1930. Edward Hines continued to operate the mill under a couple different names until 1983, when the property was sold to Snow Mountain Pine. Snow Mountain Pine operated the mill until around 1995, when it closed. One change brought by Snow Mountain Pine was the construction of a manufactured wood products facility adjacent to the old sawmill. The new plant operated under the Tecton Laminates name until shortly after the sawmill closed, when it was sold to Louisiana Pacific. The laminates plant continues to operate today as the last vestige of the once great timber industry in Burns.
