Section 7: Moving And Unloading The Engine And Tender

The tender was moved to the Roundhouse beginning late night June 3 and reached the Roundhouse early in the morning of June 4. It was taken through the Prince's Gates then along Lakeshore Blvd, to Rees Street, to Bremner Blvd. Although it took some time to align the trailer with one of the tracks at the roundhouse, the tender was finally unloaded by 7am. The locomotive however, had to go a slightly different route and was moved a few days later commencing on the night of June 9 and reached the roundhouse a few hours later on the morning of June 10.

The Engine exited the CNE parking lot by going down Newfoundland Drive, where it proceeded to travel Eastbound on the Westbound lanes of Lakeshore Blvd. Maneuvering the locomotive out of the parking lot was tricky as each turn required moving all of the wheels supporting the platform manually, one at time, in the direction of travel, and then resetting each wheel set afterwards to move forward. While traveling down the Lakeshore, there was some concern that the locomotive might not clear the TTC wires that cross the intersection and specifically, it was suggested that the Continuous Blowdown Muffler on the back of the cab be taken down, however the engine sailed right under the wires with room to spare.

As the locomotive continued along the Lakeshore, there were two more obstacles that had the potential to foul the move. The Engine sitting on the float would not clear the Gardiner Expressway had it taken the Eastbound lanes of Lakeshore Blvd and the City was worried that a bridge on the Westbound Lakeshore lanes spanning Spadina Avenue might not be strong enough to support the weight of the locomotive. These concerns delayed the move by a week or two as the City and the Contractor sought engineering reports that would determine if the bridge could take the load.

The contractor eventually got the okay to move the locomotive over the bridge, and as the engine crossed the bridge, the bridge did not creak nor crumble under the load. Just to be on the safe side, the contractor installed a few extra wheel sets just prior to crossing the bridge and removed them afterwards. Before the locomotive could get to the Roundhouse, two tight turns had to be made onto Rees Street and then Bremner Blvd, before the locomotive reached its new home.

Quite a number of people came out to witness moving the engine (there was also a crowd watching the tender move too), as well as several local television stations. For the move, the contractor set up a series of lights on the float to illuminate the wheels on 6213 and installed a large banner with his name on the running boards. It should also be worth mentioning that the move was documented by the Discovery Channel (but I guess they weren't interested in what it took to prepare the locomotive).

It wasn't until the morning of June 18 that the engine was finally unloaded. Between the time that the engine arrived and the unloading, the float it rested on had to have the wheel sets pulled out before the float could be lowered and a ramp set up to unload the Engine. For the unloading, the contractor used a ramp for the rails on the float to merge with the rails on the ground, however this was damaged a few days earlier when the tender was unloaded and had to be repaired before the engine could be lowered. Once that was in place, the engine began to be lowered down at 8 AM and took roughly an hour to clear the float, at which  point, the THRA switcher took over. First they tried moving the engine onto one of the tracks between the Roundhouse and Turntable, but the engine wouldn't fit as the stoker screw was right up against the door and the engine was still fouling the turntable. Later that day, the engine and tender were reunited, and the locomotive was test fit on the turntable with the switcher, and both locomotives managed to fit on the turntable (with couplers closed), clearing the pit railing by about 4" on each end, thus completing the move of 6213.
