ALCo Lateral Motion Device on 6167

Lateral Motion Devices were used to allow a given driving wheel on a steam locomotive to move from side to side a pre-determined distance. This allowed the locomotive to negotiate sharper curves, reduce wear on the rail and wheel flanges, as well as helping to prevent derailments caused by the leading (or trailing) wheels climbing the rail. The springs between the driving boxes help keep the wheel centered when it isn't going through a curve. CNR 6167 is equipped with the ALCo Lateral Motion Device on the leading axle and is set to allow the wheel to move 5/8" in either direction.
