CNR Inventory Tags

In order to keep track of its shop machinery, the CNR assigned all equipment an inventory number. The numbers could either be painted on or a small number plate could be applied in accordance with shop regulations. These Inventory Tags, or "CAN NAT" Plates were generally bronze castings, measuring approximately 3/16" x 2" x 4".

The CNR was divided into three regions with each region having its own numbering system, however some shops had their own numbering system. The symbols observed thus far are "AR" for the Atlantic Region, "CR" for the Central Region, "WR" for the Western Region and "PU" for the Transcona backshops in Manitoba

Maintenance Regulation No. 39
Record Of Shop Machinery

1. Records:
A complete record of all stationary engines, machine tools, hoists, cranes, pumps, etc., including electric motors and generators, of a value of over One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) will be kept in the office of the General Superintendent of Motive Power and Car Equipment.

2. Identification Of Numbers:
Every machine of types referred to in paragraph one, must carry an identification number. There are two methods of numbering machinery:

System (a) The Shop Superintendent or Officer in Charge will assign numbers from one up, to cover all machines at the particular station.

System (b) All machinery on the Region will be given a serial number which will be assigned by the General Superintendent of Motive Power and Car Equipment. The numbers in this case will form one series of numbers for the whole region.

3. Number Plates:
As decided by the General Superintendent of Motive Power and Car Equipment for the region, numbers may be painted on the machines, in white, or number plates to Drawing No. 1H-10373 will be used. Whichever system is adopted will be standard for the region.

4. Painting Machines:
All machiners must be painted Battleship Grey.

5. Transfering machinery:
Machines must not be moved from one station to another without the authority of the General Superintendent of Motive Power and Car Equipment. When machines are transferred they will be dealt with according to whether under system (a) or (b).

System (a) The Shop Superintendent or Officer in Charge will assign a new number to suit the individual shop, and will advise the General Superintendent of Motive Power and Car Equipment, the old number of the machine as well as the new number assigned.

System (b) The machine will carry its assigned number throughout its whole life, and the number will not be changed on transfer. The officers in charge of both shipping and receiving points will advise the General Superintendent of Motive Power and Car Equipment, particulars of transfer of any machine.

6. Scrapping Machiery:
When any machine is worn out beyond repair, the officer in charge of the shop or roundhouse must make application to the General Superintendent of Motive Power and Car Equipment, through the proper channels, for the machine to be taken out of service, and until such authority is received, no action must be taken. When authority has been obtained, the officer in charge of the shop at which it is scrapped must send in a report to the General Superintendent of Motive Power and Car Equipment.
If the machine has been numbered under system (a) the same number may be used again.
If the machine has been numbered under system (b) the same number must not be used again.
7. Card Index
The records which are to be kept in the office of the General Superintendent of Motive Power and Car Equipment will be entered on C.N. Form 8952.
