Sunday July 17, 1960 CNR 6167 Excursion

On Sunday July 17, 1960, CNR 6167 pulled an excursion sponsored by the Buffalo and Rochester Chapters of the National Railway Historical Society from Fort Erie to Zephyr and Return. The train was turned at the wye in Zephyr and made lengthy stops at Toronto. Terry Sprague tells me that the train dropped off two diners in Hamilton and considers the highlight off the trip to be when on the way back to Fort Erie, the now 16 car train stalled at Merriton Hill while slowing to pick up orders. The train then backed down the hill and made another run at it.

Thanks to Doug Wells for providing me with a flyer and ticket for this trip, Terry Sprague for his comments; Don McQueen for sharing his own note; and Ken Kraemer and Jim Parker for sharing their photos of the trip.

A brief audio recording of this trip can be found on the record CN Northern Sunset, a 7-inch LP produced by Allan Sherry of Riverdale, NY. The recording was made as 6167 passed the Don Station in Toronto as the headed southbound on the Bala Sub to Union Station. The comments on the back of the record claim the date of the recording to be Monday, July 11, 1960, however I am quite confident that the date is a typo for July 17, 1960.
