Sunday May 7, 1961 CNR 6167 Excursion

On Sunday May 7, 1961, CNR 6167 pulled an excursion sponsored by the Don Valley Conservation Authority, from Toronto to Lindsay and Return. Dave Spiegelman tells me that this was his first trip with 6167 and explained that it was one of a series of trips intended to promote the conservation of the Don Valley. He tells me that the train ran all the way to Lindsay along the Uxbridge sub, passing through Blackwater Junction. In Lindsay, the train backed onto the Haliburton sub to park the train and turn for the return trip. Runpasts were held at Milliken and Mariposa. Dave adds that 6167 put on a good show when the train stalled on a steep grade just north of Markham, finally making it over after 3 attempts. This trip marked 6167's first excursion along the Uxbridge Subdivision, and there is a rumour that a few days before the run, the engine was run light to Blackwater Junction and back to see if the bridges could take the weight.

Thanks to Rob Burnet for supplying me with a flyer for this trip and Dave Speigelman for his comments and photo. For some reason the flyer for this trip features a photo of 6153. This photo was later used for the two flyers I have for the DVCA's trip on May 13, 1962, however this time every instance of the numeral "53" was scratched out on the photo. This photo was also quite blatantly used as the basis for a drawing included in another flyer for a 6167 excursion, the October 21, 1962 trip sponsored by the London South Lions.
