CNR 6167 Excursions
On Saturday July 8 & Sunday July 9, 1961, CNR 6167 pulled
two excursions, both of which were sponsored by the Upper Canada Railway
Society. The Saturday trip ran from Toronto to Oshawa and Return, and upon
arrival at Oshawa, excursionists were given a tour of the Oshawa Electric
Railway. The Sunday trip ran from Toronto to Belleville and Lindsay and Return.
Thanks to Don McQueen for supplying me with a brochure and program for these
trips.
July 8 & 9 A TWO DAY RAIL SPECTACULARfor
the ENTHUSIAST and PHOTOGRAPHER
...yes SPECTACULAR is the word
to describe the twin bill planned by the Excursion Committee of the Upper Canada Railway Society.
STEAM EXCURSION to an ELECTRIC LINE!
On Saturday, July 8th, 6167, the last remaining active CN
steam locomotive will once again haul a UCRS Special, this time to Oshawa,
Ontario. There we will transfer to the OSHAWA RAILWAY, a subsidiary electric
line of the CN, for a tour of the OR's trackage. Since regular coaches cannot
be accommodated on the electric line, our party will board clean GONDOLA CARS
(lots of fresh air, and a better-than-domecar view!) to make the trip as part
of the regular freight train. At lunch time our "Private Cars" will
be set out on a siding convenient to the business district and restaurants,
and the aficionado will also enjoy a half-hour visit to the Oshawa Railway's
shops. Movie run-pasts and photo stops will be a feature of the day, on both
the Steam and Electric portions of the tour.
Leave TORONTO Union St'n Sat. July 8, at 10:45 a.m.

The STEAM ROUTE to BELLEVILLE
and LINDSAY
For the second day in a row, the CN will preen its giant of
the rails for a truly interesting day for the rail enthusiast. This will be a
day with something for everyone: meandering through the tortuous curves of the
Uxbridge subdivision, the quiet, out-of-the-way stretch from Belleville to
Lindsay, (seldom seen by railfans!) and for those who like their railroading
"hot", we'll have a chance to see what 6167 can do on the high iron
of the Oshawa Sub. UCRS Lunch Car to delight and sustain the Inner Man; Photo
stops and movie runs galore; air-conditioned equipment; open baggage car for
tape-recording; EGAD, Sir! 250 miles of steam, steel, scenery and cinders for
$8.00! (Young tads 5-12 years go for $4.00. See also bargain 2-day fares
below.)

Combination Trip
July 8, 1961

To-day the Society offers its excursion riders a novel
combination trip-- a run over the "High Iron" of the C. N. R. Oshawa
Subdivision behind redoubtable Northern 6167, and a quaint gondola car tour of
the 4-mile, freight-only Oshawa Railway (why go to Venice?)

The Oshawa Railway is an electrically-operated switching railway which
provides a connection from CNR and CPR interchanges to most of the City's
larger industries, the most notable of which is, of course, the plant of
General Motors of Canada on Bond Street. The Railway was originally a
promotion of the Rathbun Company of Deseronto, Ontario, falling later into
the fold of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada, and in 1923 became a
subsidiary of the Canadian National Railways.
Operation commenced as a street car line on Simcoe Street on June 13,
1895, and this single car line (see map) continued to serve the City until
January 27, 1940, when it was replaced by buses. Soon after the inception of
passenger
service, the O.R. commenced freight service, using the first electric
locomotive built in Canada (1895).
The Oshawa Railway Shop, though not large, has through the years
built several units of equipment and has also performed some notable rebuild
and modification work on existing rolling stock. Possibly the best-known
Oshawa product is Diesel-electric locomotive 500 of the Thousand Islands
Railway.

WARNING: Excursionists are STRICTLY FORBIDDEN to climb on
any car or structure of the Oshawa Railway for the purpose of taking
photographs, because of the presence of HIGH-VOLTAGE overhead wires.
