On Sunday October 15, 1961, CNR 6167 pulled an excursion
sponsored by the Buffalo and Rochester Chapters of the National Railway
Historical Society from Fort Erie to St. Thomas and and Return. Thanks to Don McQueen for supplying me with a flyer for this trip, and Doug Wingfield for sharing his photograph.
FALL FOLIAGE IRON HORSE GALLOP (15th ANNUAL R. H. SHAPLEY MEMORIAL TRIP) FORT ERIE to ST. THOMAS and Return Sponsored by BUFFALO CHAPTER - ROCHESTER CHAPTER NATIONAL RAILWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
PLAN OF OPERATION: STEAM POWERED Special Train will leave Fort Erie, Ont., CNR Station and proceed via Dunnville Subdivision through Port Colborne and Dunnville to Caledonia, thence via the Hagersville Sub. to Jarvis, and onto the Cayuga Sub, for the run to St. Thomas. Return to Fort Erie will be via the Cayuga Sub., used by Wabash Railroad Redball Freights on the run from Windsor, Ont., to Fort Erie. CNR Locomotive 6167, a Northern type 4-8-4, will be used, so bring your cameras to take pictures of her and the scenic beauty of the trip. Buses will provide direct connections to trainside at Fort Erie from Rochester and Jamestown. PHOTO RUN-PASTS: Several photo run-pasts will be made on this trip over railroad trestles, and there will be ample opportunities for photography at stops for the servicing of the steam locomotive. Baggage cars with protective bars across open doors will be provided at either end of the train for photography and sound recording. MEALS: Full-sized CNR Diners will be provided for dinner service. You MUST indicate on the Reservation Coupon the number of meals desired on the Diner, - pay for meals on the train. If you so desire you may bring your own food.
NOTE: Bus transportation between Buffalo and Fort Erie leaves from Niagara St. and Porter Ave., at 8:45 A.M. for the CNR Station. Please indicate on Reservation Coupon if you desire this service costing 75c per person for the round trip. For those driving there is plenty of parking space at the CNR Sta. on Bridge St. near the International Railway Bridge. ROCHESTER PASSENGER: Buses provided between Rochester and Fort Erie, leaving Blue Bus Terminal, South Avenue and Broad Sts., at 7:30 A.M. Tickets obtainable by mail from Trip Secretary, Rochester Chapter, NRHS; P.O. Box 3091 - Rochester 14, N. Y.; and in person at the following: Rowe - Photographer - 203 W. Main at Clarissa; from the Clinton Book Store - 204 Court St., and from Rochester Travel Service, 606 Temple Building. JAMESTOWN PASSENGERS: Buses leave Jamestown Greyhound Terminal at 4th and Prendergast at 7:15 A.M. Tickets may be obtained by mail or in person from H. F. REMITTANCE: Coupon with full remittance (payable to Buffalo Chapter, NRHS or Rochester Chapter, NRHS) must be received not later than Friday, October 6, 1961, after which fares increase $2.00 per ticket. Running Extra
October 15: Canadian National 4-8-4 No. 6167 will be used on special train from Fort Erie to St. Thomas, Ont., which will be run under sponsorship of Buffalo and Rochester chapters of National Railway Historical Society. Going trip will be via Port Colborne, Caledonia, and Jarvis; return direct to Fort Eria via CN trackage known as "Wabash" owing to its use from Windsor to Fort Erie by Wabash freight trains. Excursion leaves Fort Erie Canadian National 9:30 a.m. [DST], returns 8 p.m. Several photo runs will be made over railway bridges.
