Saturday May 4, 1963 CNR 6167 Excursion

On Saturday May 4, 1963, CNR 6167 pulled an excursion from Sarnia to Windsor. Reliable information on this excursion is scarce but based on the available evidence I suspect that excursion train started in Detroit and was pulled by diesel to Sarnia where 6167 was coupled on, taking the train to London, then on to Windsor. From there the excurionists could have taken a bus or taxi back to Detroit. Don mcQueen tells me that the train was deadheaded back to Toronto the next day and 6167 would be run as a light move. Unlike 6218, 6167 was never certified to operate in the USA which is why she didn't pull the train over the entirety of the route.

Doug Leffler photographed the train at Sarnia, Watford and Komoka, which is consistent with the Sarnia-London-Chatham-Windsor route Don McQueen Lists in his notes. Don also states that the trip was sponsored by the Michigan Railroad Club, however an advertisement in the Running Extra section of the May 1963 issue of trains states that the sponsor of the trip was Hobby Shop Inc. The ad also states:

May 4: Excursion on GTW and CN leaving Grand Trunk Station, Detroit, Michigan 9 a.m. will be sponsored by Hobby Shop Inc., Detroit. Trip will run to Sarnia and Windsor, Ont. via London behind diesel power. Fare $10.50 U.S. currency. For more information contact Hobby Shop Inc. 19924 Livernois, Detroit 21, Michigan.
