Saturday May 11, 1963 CNR 6167 Excursion

On Saturday May 11, 1963, CNR 6167 pulled an excursion from Toronto to Cobourg, stopping in Oshawa to allow the passengers to attend a  track removal ceremony on the Oshawa Railway. In Don McQueen's notes, he mentions that the consist was actually a mixed freight and that the freight cars were dropped off at Oshawa upon the trains arrival and that on the return from Cobourg, excursionists attended the Oshawa Railway's ‘Railway Day’ parade and ceremony to mark the last train on King Street and the start of track removal from King St. in downtown Oshawa.

Don Driscoll provided me with a copy of the flyer for this trip as well as a number of photos he had taken that day. Don tells me that he was living in the Montreal area at the time and took the overnight train from Montreal to Toronto on May 10, just in time to take the excursion and then took the overnight back to Montreal after the excursion. He also sent me a copy of his sleeping car ticket for the return trip to Montreal, which at the time cost $3.20 for an Upper Berth. A young Dave Spiegelman also rode this trip (and coincidently shows up in on of Don's photos) and provided addition details on the trip. He tells me that there were two runpasts made, one in each direction and that one of the runpasts was carried out near the Rouge River bridge. He also added that the excursionists were bused from the Oshawa Station to the King St ceremony via transit buses.
