Sunday October 27, 1963 CNR 6167 Excursion

CNR 6167 pulled its first trip out of Montreal, QC for Victoriaville, QC and Return on Sunday October 27, 1963. The event was sponsored by the Canadian Railroad Historical Association, and was documented in the November 1963 issue of Canadian Rail. The article, written by F. Angus and E.L. Modler reports that the 12-car train departed Montreal's Central Station at 8:30 am, taking with it all but 30 of the train's passengers, as this group had opted to pace the first segment of the journey in an open top bus. When the train made its first stop at Beloeil these passengers boarded the train bringing the total number of passengers to 622. Also while at Beloeil passengers were let off at several locations in order to photograph and film several run-pasts.

After the run-pasts, all of the passengers boarded the train which departed Otterburn Park at 9:48. This was followed by a 24-minute long water stop at St. Hyacinthe, a high speed run past at Upton, and a crew change and water stop at Richmond. The train reached Victoriaville at 1:30 pm, where it was turned on a wye, and replenished with coal and water before departing for Montreal at 3:12 pm. Afterwards the two more run pasts were held at the bridges at milepoints 63.9 and 73.7, followed by another water stop and crew change at Richmond, and a stop at St. Hyacinthe for water and night-time photography. Passengers were discharged at Beloeil and St. Lambert before stopping at Bridge Street to change engines, at which point CNR electric #187 took over the train, which pulled the excursion train the rest of the way back to Central Station, arriving at 7:28 pm, apparently only 3 minutes late.

     The consist included express Car 9131, coaches 5371, 5444, 5369, 5638, 5511, 5370, 5582, 5378, 5367, and cafeteria cars 493 and 497.

At one point, 6167 was displayed with sister Northern 6153 and 4-4-0 #40. The trip ended up going to Victoriaville rather then the advertised Sherbrooke. As far as I know, this was 6167's first and only excursion in Quebec, and the only excursion outside of Ontario. Dave Spiegelman pointed out to me that 6167 was not certified to operate in the US, whereas 6218 was. Don McQueen mentions in his notes that 6167 was hauled Dead In Tow to and from Spadina to Montreal with her main rods off.  Don also supplied a flyer for the trip.

Rick Goodfellow sent me the following series of photos documenting this excursion.
