Preparing 6167 For Sandblasting

Preparations for sandblasting began in Mid June. The main job was masking off parts for sand blasting. All of the bearings on the running gear, valve gear, driving boxes, wheel bearings, lateral motion device- in short all moving parts, were masked off to keep dirt from getting in.

Another job, was repairing one of the turret valves that had broken off at some point. About 1/2" of the threaded portion of the broken valve was stuck inside the turret valve. The broken section was cut out with a saw, then the remaining threads on the broken valve that were damaged (slightly bent, etc.) were repaired with a file to get them able to thread back into the turret valve. With the liberal use of Teflon tape and Never-seize, the valve threaded in sufficiently to keep sand etc, out while the locomotive is getting sandblasted. Of course, this repair is not intended in any way to take any pressure if the the engine were to be operated, the valve would have to be replaced.

Finally, The headlight was taken off and put into storage.

The asbestos contractor also removed all the asbestos that had been forced into the cab when the boiler was power washed during the abatement, and sealed the gaps between the cab wall and the boiler shell.

Protecting the wheel bearings and motion work from the upcoming sandblasting.
