Montmagny Bridge Photos - May 23, 2011

Montmagny Station Photos - May 23, 2011

On July 6, 1943 CNR 6167 struck sister engine 6166 at mile 77.5 of the Montmagny Subdivision. Grant and Lorna Kingsland happened to visit the site on May 23, 2011 and were kind enough to provide me a number of modern day views of the Bridge and the station.

The bridge is at the corner of St. David and St. Nicolas Streets. Note that there is a longer bridge just to the west of this one. But the bridge in the photo wears the milepost 77.5 (actually has two which is very unusual - one on each side) and is the west end of the bridge. All of these photos were shot from the west end of the Bridge, which is where all of the action happened.

Looking east

"This view looking west from the west end of the bridge. In the near distance can be seen the girders for the longer bridge and just beyond that to the right of the right of way you can just make out the red end of the station."

"Here is a photo of the bridge at Montmagny, QC that vaguely resembles one of the wreck views. It's the best I could do without swimming out into the middle of the river where I am sure the 1943 photo was taken from. But the shoreline has also changed drastically over the years making it further more difficult to replicate the view. And of course note the other bridge in the background. Today, as you can see, there is a pole line along this side of the bridge. Looks like it has been there forever but is not visible in the wreck photos. The line may have come down in the carnage."

"This is similar to the wreck shot from the "other" side of the bridge with the CN boxcar visible underneath the bridge. I thought it might be between shore and the first pier so that's what I shot. Obviously the conduit running alongside the bridge is a "recent" addition."

"This may be a similar view to the photo of the freight cars piled up - looking at the GTW hopper car. Shot from slightly below grade. But I think my shot is much closer to the bridge than the wreck shot. I am of the impression that at some point in time, the pole line was altered. Today, the poles are attached to the bridge piers hugging the girder plates. The wreck photos show no poles here but could they have been wiped out in the wreck. There are obviously poles on land but nothing visible on the bridge".

This is the auto bridge that can be seen in the background in some of the wreck photos.

Here is a view of the bridge with reference points St. Nicolas at St. David Streets.
