The Viloco Whistle operator consisted of an operating lever located inside the cab in front of the engineer, and a small piston mounted on the locomotive's whistle. When the engineer depressed the lever air would be admitted to the piston which would operate the whistle. This device saved the engineer from having to reach up and pull on the whistle chord. When using the whistle Operator, the whistle is either Open or Closed and doesn't allow the engineer to quill the whistle. This produces a very distinct sound in comparison to a whistle being manually operated.
Some railways elected to have their locomotives use only the Whistle Operator and not a pull chord, however 6167 uses both methods. Air for the Whistle Operator is supplied by the manifold coming off the brake stand, and the pipe to the piston runs underneath the boiler jacket, emerging near the smokebox.
