Restoration Journal - November 1, 2008 Asbestos Abatement Complete! Photos by Grant Kingsland & Jim Hall The asbestos abatement of CNR 6167 was recently completed, and provided below are some nice high(er) resolution photos to show the result, and help answer the question of just how badly deteriorated is 6167's boiler shell. Sadly, though, the contractor did not clear out the asbestos in the Feed Water Heater or aroud the Cylinders, and missed some asbestos tape around the piping. Picture #1 It took us eight years to get this far, but at least the asbestos is (mostly) history. Now we can really start working on the locomotive. Unfortunately, the season is over for the year! Picture #2 Some of the lubricator lines seem to have been mangled. We'll have to go in there and trace them all out at some point in time. Picture #3 The thin mangled bar of steel that's resting on the running board brackets, was used to hold the asbestos lagging in place when the locomotive was in service. It normally ran just below the the top of the boiler, and you can see the studs it was mounted to. Picture #4 The bottom most pipe carried the exhaust steam from the air and water pumps to the cylinder saddle where the steam was then exhausted up the stack. The pipe just above that was the discharge line running from the Water Pump to the Feed Water Heater, and above that is air reservoir piping, held in place by the air reservoir bracket. Above that is the spindle for the blower valve. Picture #5 We can finally get a good look at the unusual shim arrangement on the air and water pump brackets, as well as the steam supply lines to the air and water pump. The thin pipe mounted on the corner of the firebox runs to the Water Pump sight glass in the cab (to indicate to the Fireman whether the pump was actually pumping). Picture #6 Some of the caps for the flexible stay-bolts have seen better days, as has the steam supply pipe to the Water Pump. Picture #7 Broad view of the Left side of the boiler. Picture #8 Right side of the Firebox. Picture #9 Right side of the third course of the boiler. Picture #10 Right side of the second course of the boiler. Picture #11 Right side of the first course of the boiler. Picture #12 A closer look at the throat sheet and all the flexible stays that support the combustion chamber. Picture #13 Another look at the firebox. Picture #14 The air and water pump brackets. Picture #15 The left side of the firebox and throat sheet. Picture #16 The left side of the firebox and throat sheet once more. Picture #17 Picture #18 Picture #19 Picture #20 Close-ups of the Turret Valves.
