October Updates
Photos by Grant Kingsland

On October 7, we installed the steps on the right side of the cab and fitted the feed pump suction pipe on the left Side. Iron Works was present and finished removing the running boards, ladders, and steps from the tender. While they were there, we got them weld some heavy 3/4" nuts to the tops of both drawbar pins so we can thread in some eye-bolts. This way when we go to reinstall the pins we use these to hoist the pins in place instead of trying to jack them up.

On October 12, we installed the steps on the right side of the cab and installed the engine drawbar pin. The eyebolt idea worked quite well. We also installed all of the cylinder head and valve chest covers, after cleaning the threads on the studs and nuts. We also did the same to the studs and nuts that hold all the wood blocks on the tender trucks for the brake cylinder levers. The Tender drawbar pin was cleaned and painted, while the engine drawbar pin was thoroughly greased being it was reinstalled.

A photo of the right side with the steps to the cab reapplied.

The running boards and ladders on the tender have been removed.

We had an eye-bolt installed on the engine drawbar pin (an idea we borrowed from the 6060 crew), and suffice to say, it works great. We used a come-along to lift the pin in the hole. No crushed fingers this time either! The jack is just being used to hold the retainer plate in place. Finally, the pin was thoroughly cleaned and greased before being put back in.

"This isn't a particularly good photo but it shows how we rigged the upper end. We originally simply used a pipe rested against those two nuts on the frame at the sides of the hole. Unfortunately, this was too low as we did not have enough height for the lift. So we just grabbed some handy pieces of wood to increase the height sufficiently. Now that we know what height is required, we could make something more permanent. The other end of the come-along was tied onto the end of the stoker screw - actually the universal block. And yes, if the engine and tender are joined together, the rigging will have to be done different. The same would apply to the tender drawbar pin. Anyway, it worked like a charm. No one got any fingers crushed."

The upper part of the pin sticking through the upper bushing. The area around the pin including the holes in the drawbars and the bushings have also been greased to resist corrosion.

Newly installed rear cylinder and valve head covers.

Newly installed Cab steps.

Newly Installed front cylinder and valve head covers. The cylinder cover has been welded up after we had to cut in to it earlier in the summer in order to get it off as it was stuck in place due to a large buildup of rust and other debris.
