6167 Reassembly Progress
Photos by Grant Kingsland& Joe Dimech

The reassembly of 6167 has been progressing over the past few months, with work resuming on May 3. Since that time a number of small jobs have been attended to including polishing and clear coating the bell, installing the steam supply line to the dynamo and the steam sensing line to the continuous blowdown valve, installing the safety valve cowl, and painting the edges of the running boards on the engine and tender as well as the handrails on the front of the engine. The numberboards where taken down so that the asbestos lagging on the feedwater heater and its jacketing can be attended to. As well, one of the committee members has been busy working on restoring the cab, and it is gradually making it look inhabitable once again.

Meanwhile one of the contractors that we have brought in to handle various jobs has been busy the past few months fabricating and installing a new throttle rod in place of the one that went missing (fabricating a welded clevis in place of the original casting), grinding the welds around the patch installed on the side of cab so that it is now flush with the rest of the side of the cab, and installing the covers over the steam pipes to the cylinders.

However of course, all of our efforts thus far have been hampered by this fence problem on the left side of the engine, which arose when a fence was installed about seven inches away from the left side of the locomotive, so we’ve been unable to do any work on that side (which is the side that most of the general public sees).

At present a great deal of redevelopment has occurred in downtown Guelph, including the construction of a new transit terminal in place of the old bus station (and also 6167’s former home). GO Transit has already installed facilities at the site of the former GTR/CNR station, and is still building away. The factory across from the station has also been torn down, and a second track has been reinstalled and realigned. The old tunnel that ran under the tracks, providing a connection to the old bus terminal has also been sealed, and a new GO tunnel is being installed. We are still waiting to find out how all of GO’s development will affect the locomotive as, when the plans for 6167’s new site were drawn up by the City of Guelph, apparently GO had yet to finalize its own plans for the site.

The numberboard was taken down, the front handrails and edges of the running boards were painted white, and the steam pipe covers have been installed.
