Modeling Santa Fe Passenger Cars

Santa Fe Heavyweight Coach Notes

I have yet to find a great resource on SF Hwt coaches. Therefore one must look in a number of places. What I have done is find quality photos that are taken squarely on the side angle and then enlarge them on the copy machine to HO scale. This is not always accurate since I don't know how long a given coach is unless I have some scale to reference.

I have included two pages for the modeler:

Resources: (See your public library about Interlibrary Loan)

Ellington, Frank M., and Joe. W. Shine. Head End Cars: Santa Fe Railway: Passenger Car Reference Series – Volume one. Highlands Ranch, CO: Santa Fe Railway Historical & Modeling Society, 1999. While not talking directly about coaches. The book does discuss conversions of coaches to front end cars.

Frailey, Fred W. A Quarter Century of Santa Fe Consists. Godfrey, IL: RPC Publications, 1974. Paperback, 208 pages. Photos, diagrams, and some description of cars. Unfortunately has only one coach photo, 3311 in 1953 after being air conditioned. He does include a very useful roster to help show when cars were built or altered.

Stagner, Lloyd E. ATSF Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment. Edison, NJ: Morning Sun Books, 1995, Hardbound, 128 pgs. Shows 3035, 3041, and 3067 in service in the 60s with short windows and SE a/c.

Car and Locomotive Plans for Model Railroaders. Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway System, 1953. 38 pages. Contains a good bld. photo of 3354 and a scale drawing of same showing a/c ducts. Also has photo and drawing of Coach club 1535 and drawing as Lounge Car 1358-59.

Passenger Train Consists – Jan. 1937. New York: Wayner Publications, nd. 53 pages, 44 illustrations, paperback. No date. This books lists all of the transcontinental and many secondary passenger trains operated by the ATSF in January, 1937, and lists the various cars assigned to each and the schedule for each. Photos illustrate the different types of cars, primarily heavyweights, used on those trains. Shown are 3040 SE air conditioned with roof hatches visible and low windows, partitioned coach 825 non-a/c, chair smoker 3133 a/c with large windows, chair 3344 strong side view non-a/c with large windows, and coach club 1535 a/c with large windows.

Santa Fe Diesels & Cars. New York, NY: Wayner Publications, 1974. 80 pages. Photo of chair 3040 SE air conditioned with roof hatches visible and low windows and chair diner 1519.

When modeling, it is essential to establish your time frame and location. There were major visual changes when air conditioning was installed. Frailey's book indicates which cars were air conditioned and which were not. Air conditioning meant ducts on the roof, roof hatches, more underbody gear, and usually a plating of the upper portion of the coach windows. Some coaches also received later mechanical air conditioning which included the replacement of toilet windows with vents. I hope to install a page on Steam Ejector a/c in the future.

The air conditioned cars were used on the named trains. The non-air conditioned cars were relegated to lesser trains and shortline service.

Another consideration concerning time centers around the rebuilding of these cars into other cars. By the early 50s, coaches were being refurbished into Baggage Express cars.
