During World War II, with regular passenger equipment in great demand, seven drovers cabooses were painted Pullman Green with gold lettering and fitted with 36-inch passenger wheels for service as rider cars on 7 and 8. H. C. Whittaker photo, A Dean Hale collection.

Santa Fe heavyweight Railway Post Office car No. 78, built by Pullman in 1927, was representative of the 60-foot apartment class of car most common to the Fast Mail Express throughout its years of service. In later years, the lightweight RPOs built for specific assignments in the streamliner pools occasionally drifted into Nos. 7 and 8, but the heavyweights could be found to the end. Joe Shine.

The 18 73'10" lightweight Class BE baggage cars in the 3409-3426 series, built in 1947 by ACF, were frequently in the consist of 7 and 8 from the time they were built until the end of service in 1967. Joe Shine.

Perhaps the most common cars to appear on the Fast Mail Express throughout its entire operation were the Class BE 73'0" baggage cars series 1700-1853, built by Pullman between 1911 and 1929.

Rebuilt from coaches in 1951-1953, the ten 79'2" horse express cars in Class BE saw frequent service on 7 and 8 through the mid 1960s. Stan Kistler, A. Dean Hale collection.

Another common car to appear on the Fast Mail Express, especially pre-war, were the 1900-1959 series Class BE "Fish Belly" heavyweight baggage cars built by ACF between 1905 and 1910. Joe Shine.

The seven non-air-conditioned baggage-coach rider cars in the 1602-2608 series, outshopped by Pullman in 1923, were assigned to the Fast Mail Express for years. Joe Shine.

Next are representative examples of lightweight head end equipment that could be found on the Fast Mail Express, especially in later years such as Baggage/mail storage/express car No. 3451 built by Budd in 1942. . Santa Fe collection, Kansas State Historical society.

Baggage/mail storage/express car No. 3797 was one in a series of 50 assembled by Santa Fe in 1958 using bodies built by Pullman. Joe Shine.

Lightweight RPO cars were few in number, and rare on the Fast Mail Express. Occasionally, however, in later years, cars like Railway Post Office car No. 102 - one in a series of 12 outshopped by Budd in 1964 - might show up in the consist of 7 and 8. Beginning in 1962, container flat cars in the 200 series, rebuilt from heavyweight diners, and fitted out for mail storage containers, began making their appearance on the Fast Mail Express. A. Dean Hale collection.
