Branchlines cars from ATSF consists are:
Santa Fe two-tone gray
"Centarch" - 5014
"Centacre" - 5015
"Centgate" - 5016
The problem is that records have yet to be produced that these cars were ever two-tone gray. Madden's files below only substantiate the TTG paint on two cars, and that is after 1957. Santa Fe Modelers had best buy undecorated kits to paint Pullman Green. If anyone can verify TTG for the Branchline names, please let me know.
Tom Madden, an expert on these issues, reported on the correct paint.
"For the early '50s, it looks like you have to stick with Pullman Green. Pullman's Car Construction Records show that most of the Santa Fe's 8-1-2's were repainted in the early fifties per drawing D-5156 (issued late 1950or early 1951), which was for "Railroad-owned conventional sleepers painted Pullman Green with standard Pullman lettering". I haven't looked at that drawing, but (intuitive leap warning) it may have the railroad name on the letterboard in yellow lettering. The following cars received that repainting (repainting dates in parentheses): Centamia (12/52), Centanda (9/52), Centarch (1/52), Centash (12/52), Centcampo (9/51), Centdale(7/53), Centello (7/51), Centholm (10/51), Centlawn (12/51), Centlea (10/51), Centloch (6/51), Centlow (5/51), Centnome (10/52), Centosa (1/52),Centpaulo (3/51), Centquora (10/53), Centrange (4/51), Centshire (12/52) and Centwell (10/52). Centaya is noted as painted "70-10" [Pullman Green] in 1951, and Centacre, Centgate, Centoak, Centrail, Centrock and Centsylvia have no repainting notations on their CCR's. They presumably remained PullmanGreen with gold lettering."
"Centwell and Centash were repainted "ATSF Exterior" in August and October 1957, respectively. "Santa Fe Exterior" is defined in Pullman's painting and striping drawing #CED-4331 as being for "AT&SF 'Tribe' Sleepers". Two-tone gray, in other words. The drawing was issued in 4/49. I haven't looked at that drawing either, but (another intuitive leap warning!) it may also have been issued to show the RR name on the letterboard. Santa Fe TTG goes back to the Scout cars, and there's no evidence to say the seven "Tribe"sleepers were ever anything other than TTG. Those two, plus Kaw Tribe (2/53) are the only HW cars shown in the update sheets with this repainting. There may well be (many?) others, but photos will have to tell the tale. Corrections and clarifications gladly sought!"
Since the cars have yet to be released, we will have to wait to see how the details, and especially the air conditioning, square with the prototype.
