SP GP40-2 7942 rests for the weekend in Guadalupe with two SSW GP40-2s. Only one of the SSW units is patched.

The San Luis Obispo based helpers are at the back of a freight helping to push it towards cuesta grade where they will really be needed. The closest engine, SP SD40M-2 number 8628 was made from a former SD40, while the middle engine, SP SD40M-2 number 8694 was made from a former Erie Lackawanna SD45M.

The San Luis Obispo helpers have two SP engines in the consist here in March 2005. Within the next few months unpatched SP locos will all but disappear from SLO.

All of the engines in SLO right now are ex-SP SD40M-2’s. And two of them, 8578 and 8655 are still in SP paint.

SP SD40M-2 number 8578 is on the south end of the SLO helpers. Most of its original paint still remains which is impressive considering the look of most ex-SP units at this point.

Almost a month after the previous photo SP SD40M-2 number 8599 is in San Luis Obispo Sitting on the yard tracks near Orcutt Rd. This is the only time I’ve ever seen a single engine left all the way out there.

SP SD40M-2 number 8599 is waiting for clearance to lead a train of hoppers north out of the Newhall yard in Santa Clara CA.
