Union Pacific's famous 4-8-4 #844 returned to
the Pacific Northwest in September 2010 with the "Portland Rose"
special to help the city of Pendleton, Ore. celebrate the centennial of
the Pendleton Roundup.
The big Northern left its home base of Cheyenne,
Wyo. Sep. 8, arriving in Portland on Sep. 13. It headed back east on Sep.
15 for three days of display in Pendleton, departing the city Sep. 19
and returning to Cheyenne Sep. 24.
Here's the 844 on Sep. 15, with auxiliary tender
#814 "Joe Jordan", SD70ACe #8444 and an 18-car train, racing
past CP Troutdale, 15 miles east of Portland, on its way to Pendleton.
The special is coming off the Kenton Line, UP's
northerly entrance into the Rose City. The track to the left is the Graham
Line, which was UP's historic passenger route into Portland.
