Lorenz

The spur to the old Lorenz mill taking off from the mainline and heading off into the woods to the sawmill site two miles off. Jeff Moore photo.

6/1992. The #39 is seen here crossing Highway 89 at Lorenz crossing. The crossing flashers rarely worked, so train crews had to turn the lights on and off manually and flag the crossing. Head brakeman Dale Brand has done this and is getting back on the locomotive; the crossing flashers will be turned off by the train crew members riding in the caboose after the train is clear of the crossing. The Lorenz spur takes off from the mainline and heads north from a point near the bottom of the dip that the train is coming out of. Picture: by Anna Moore.

In 1994 or 1995 Caltrans installed modern solar-powered crossing equipment at Lorenz and Batle crossings in exchange for the removal of the Pondosa branch bridge. A long stream of empties bound for the Sierra Pacific mill is seen here passing the new warning devices in August 2005.
