Former McCloud Equipment; Brownhoist Cranes |
The McCloud River Lumber Company owned two steam-powered Industrial Brownhoist cranes, which were numbered 15 and 16. The #15 was later re-powered with a diesel drive, while the #16 remained steam powered. Both cranes eventually became the property of the McCloud River Railroad. The #15 became McCloud River Railroad #72, while the #16 was stored and not used. The #72 remained in use on the railroad until deeded to the Great Western Railroad Museum about 1986. Additional historic photos of these cranes can be found on the Lumber Company Railroad Equipment page. |

Below are three photos of the #16. The #16 remained on the property into the late 1980's before it was scrapped, although the boom remains on the ground not far east of McCloud. Top two photos were taken 17 September 1982 by Jimmy Bryant and are courtesy of the Nevada Historical Society; the bottom photo was taken 29 March 1988 by Jerry Lamper. That's Jerry's son seated in front of the crane, with the pilot of Great Western Railway Museum's ex-Weyerhaeuser/Sierra/Rayonier 2-8-8-2 #38 visible on the left side of the photo. |
