McCloud Rails : Equipment & Rolling Stock Details

| MR Coach 01 |
| Coach 01 was purchased used by the McCloud River Railroad shortly after the railroad opened in 1897. Its origins are lost to history, but it may have come from the same source as Locomotive #1. The #01 was the primary passenger car used on the McCloud passenger trains, and it shows up in many of the old pictures of the McCloud's early passenger operations. The car lasted in regular service into the late 1930's, when it was re-classified (either in 1936 or 1939) to maintenance-of-way work. The #01 served in that capacity until 1964, when it was retired and donated along with a collection of other equipment to a proposed railroad museum at Dunsmuir, CA. The museum idea collapsed, and the equipment was turned into the Railroad Park Resort, which continues to operate a steak house dining facility and a hotel business just south of Dunsmuir, with old cabooses used as hotel cabins. The #01 serves as part of the dining facility...only three sides of the car remain, as the third has been cut away to open the car into the rest of the dining room. Its trucks still show lettering that they were cast by the J. Hammond Company in San Francisco, CA in the mid 1880's. |
