McCloud Rails : Equipment & Rolling Stock Details

| Russell Plows |
The McCloud River Railroad rostered several of these gigantic wooden wedge plows for snow removal during winter operations. Their past histories are murky; some reports have them as being built by the McCloud, but at least one source has one or two coming from the Chicago & Northwestern. Two of these plows survived the arrival of the Jordan spreader in 1952. The first of the two to go was retired and donated to a proposed railroad museum in Dunsmuir in 1964, and it survives today as part of the Railroad Park Resort. The other plow, the #1767, was damaged during the height of snow removal operations in the winter of 1968/1969. It’s disablement was the reason that the McCloud had to borrow a rotary snowplow from the Southern Pacific that winter. The plow was never repaired and has been slowly rotting at various places around McCloud ever since. Ownership of the plow was transferred to the Great Western Railroad Museum around 1986. Great Western Railroad Museum currently has this plow up for sale. |

These two pictures are of plow #1701 that the McCloud donated to a proposed railroad museum in Dunsmuir, CA during 1964. The museum never materialized, and the collection of equipment assembled for the museum is now on display at the Railroad Park Resort. |
