"G" Class

The "G" Class locomotive was built by Clyde Engineering in the early 80's. The original power of these locomotives was 3340hp however several later numbered units have been fitted with more powerful engines. Being built primarily for freight they were once the main workhorse of the Victorian fleet leading most freight trains. The locomotives where originally in "V/Line" 'tangerine' livery. After the break up and sale of the railways in the 90's by the then Premier, Jeff Kennett, the "G" Class were sold to Freight Victoria, afterwards renamed Freight Australia and painted in "Freight Australia" 'green and yellow' livery. In early 2004 Pacific National took over all Freight Australia's operations and thus all of Freight Australia's assets where bought by Pacific National including all the "G" Class locomotives except 2 locomotives Pacific National was ordered to allocate to Queensland Rail National by the ACCC to stop Pacific National from having a monopoly of interstate freight.
