As its name implies, this was the heaviest steam locomotive in operation in Victoria.
It was only used on certain lines as it was spreading track and sagging bridges.

The "R" Class steam locomotive was introduced to replace the ageing A2 class steam locomotives. 70 locomotives where built by the North British Locomotive Company Limited of Glasgow, Scotland and assigned road numbers 700 - 769. Of these only 7 where not scrapped.
