South Shore 1100 Movement

After a few hours, the freight crew returned with seven hoppers destined for the RIP tracks at Shops.

After cutting off from the hoppers, the diesels move onto the siding to pick up the line car.

Ready to make the joint

After coupling to the line car, the engineer patiently looks on while the conductor and brakeman inspect the line car and test the brakes.

With the brake test complete, the line car is moved out of the siding to couple to the hoppers.

And once the train is made up, it shoves off into the sunset toward the South Shore main line at Power.

After waiting for a couple passenger trains to meet at Sheridan, the extra pulled out of Power siding and headed through town. Here it is about to cross the former Michigan Central near 10th and Huron.

After crossing the Michigan, the train rounds the S-curve from 10th to 11th Street.

I raced ahead of the train and caught it again at School Street.

Looking the other way at School Street as the train nears Shops.

Upon arrival at Shops, the freight crew left and the Shops carmen took over. Here, the train pulls eastward into the yard to clear the RIP track switch before setting off the hoppers.

Once the RIP's were set out, the diesels hauled the line car back into the yard.

And it has arrived! The crew would leave the 1100 here, on Track 6 next to the old "new shop."

After securing the car, we took a look inside. Here's the view looking east, with the tool bench on the left and the wire parts storage bins on the right.

And the view from the other end, where the crew quarters are located. Note the coal stove in the foreground.
