A Scenic Journey Through the Rocky Mountains on Amtrak's California Zephyr

Rocky Mountain Railfanning Trip

The following photos, and others that haven't been scanned, were taken on Friday, Sept. 5, in the Hot Sulphur Springs, Parshall, Kremmling, Bond and Burns areas along the Colorado River, between Granby, Colo., and Glenwood Springs, Colo
. The photos are of Amtrak's California Zephyr, westbound No. 5 and eastbound, No. 6.

These pics were taken as part of a business trip to the area. The photographer also got good pics of the Southwest Chief in northern New Mexico.

In this region of the trackage, especially through Gore Canyon, train speeds are restricted, allowing a personal automobile to travel from Byers Canyon, via highway, to Kremmling, then above and around Gore via sand road, and to the next publicly accessible area outside of Gore Canyon's west entrance, near State Bridge, before the train arrives.
If driving fast enough, the driver can keep up and just a little ahead of the westbound along the Colorado River near Bond, getting photos at several locations.
