DAVE HANSON - H.O. Scale Models
Dave is the first submission, and what a great job he did with his engine
and cars. I have included Dave's email message to me concerning these cars
below the pictures. Again, my hats off to a great modeler. Hey
Dave, bring your train to the Highland
Pacific Model Railroad Club sometime next time you are in Los Angeles
area. -Charles

"I left LA for the Navy in 1991, and I found out about the Metrolink when my dad mailed me a newspaper clipping about the first run. I was hooked ever since. I live in out of state now, but whenever I visit the folks we take the Metrolink down to LA and have a sandwich at Phillipe's next to Union Station. Great place to eat. When Microscale came out with the Metrolink decals in '93 or '94 ( I don't remember) I was ecstatic. I chopped up a lifelike F-40PH and rebuilt the entire front section from styrene and paper. I am an electrician so I tried to make the lighting as real as possible. There are two strobes on the roof, a headlight, an interior light, and two ditch lights that are on when going forward. There are three red LED's that come on when the engine is in reverse. I used an athearn GP59 chassis for the power unit.
The Bombardier cars are completely scratchbuilt. Sheet styrene for the sides (every window was hand cut out) and roof pieces. There is a balsa wood frame inside for stability and a hardwood floor for rigidity. I made the trucks, too. Pieces of Balsa wood and styrene. The end car, as you can see in the photos, has electronics also. For normal operation, the tail car has two red LED's at the bottom and one flashing strobe above the rear door. When the tail car is in the lead, there are two headlights on the sides of the door.
For the Periwinkle color, I had to custom mix some paints. On an excursion to LA one time I was able to get a small paint chip from an F59PH. I took it home and mixed up some red and blue (and gray, I think) and the result was pretty close.
Enjoy the pictures." - Dave Hanson
