PETERBOROUGH DIVISION. S.A.R STEAM WORKING ORDERS (Revised 14/7/48) "Locking Facing Points" (Port Pirie-Cockburn Line).--At stations on Port Pirie Cockburm Lines, all facing switches, whether provided with the mechanical detecting apparatus controlling the home signal, or not, must be pinned and locked for all main line movements. Speed of Engines. Classes "T" and "Z" Engines (a) Working express passenger, wayside passenger, or Limited mixed trains, consisting of bogie rolling stock only, between Peterborough and Quorn must not exceed a speed of 40 miles per hour. (b) Working express passenger, wayside passenger, or Limited mixed trains, between Terowie and Peterborough; Peterborough and Cockburn; Peter- borough and Port Pirie Junction; must not exceed a speed of 35 miles per hour. (e) Working all other trains on all lines must not exceed a speed of 30 miles per hour. Classes "Y" and "YX" Engines. (d) Working any train on the Peterborough Division must not exceed a speed of 30 miles per hour. Note.--The above is subject to the speed restrictions imposed on various lines. Exchange of Electric Staff at Automatic Electric Staff Unattended Stations. The Fireman must assist the Guard by carrying the electric staff from the Enginemun to the Guard and from the Guard to the Engineman. The following allowances are made for changing electric staff for freight trains at unattended stations :- Equal 25 vehicles .............. 3 minutes " 45 .............. 4 " " 60 .............. 5 " Over 60 .............. 6 " "Loading of Freight for Commonwealth Lines" --Freight for Port Angusla and stations beyond, also for stations Willochra and beyond, must be loaded into air-fitted or piped freight cars. "Commonwealth NG 20-Ton Cars" - Commonwealth Railway freight cars, (Class NG) must not be loaded for or sent to Broken Hill. These cars must not travel with the doors down, as the doors in that position infringe the minimum structure gauge. "Marshalling of Employee's Sleeping Vans and Weighbridge Vans". - Employee's Sleeping and Weighbridge Vans equipped with Westinghouse Brake complete, or air pipes only, must be marshalled either next to engine or brakevan and not in the centre of the train. "Marshalling of Livestock Cars "--Sheep and Cattle Cars for roadside stations must be marshalled in the order shown below for "Down" trains. On the "UP" journey they must be marshailed in the reverse order-- Peterborough and Quorn "Down" Orroroo -- Sheep nearest engine, cattle second. Carrieton -- Cattle nearest engine, sheep second. Hammond -- Sheep nearest engine, cattle second. Bruce -- Sheep nearest engine, cattle second. Peterborough and Port Pirie "Down" Jamestown--Cattle nearest engine, sheep second. Gladstone--Cattle nearest engine, sheep second. Crystal Brook--Sheep nearest engine, cattle second. Peterborough and Wilmington "Down" Wirrabara--Cattle nearest engine, sheep second. Booleroo Centre--Sheep nearest engine, cattle second. Melrose , Sheep nearest engine, cattle second. Peterboruogh and Cockburn-- "Down" Nackara - Sheep nearest engine, cattle second. Cockburn - Cattle neffrest engine, sheep second. "Loading in Cars Belonging to Other Systems."--The instruction regarding cars belonging to other Railways they are not to be loaded in excess marked carrying capacity as prescribed in rule 58 will not apply to Class Gx (12 tons capacity) or freight cars of the Silverton Tramway Co. Ltd. with the exception of Classes "D" "E" and "G." South Australian, Silverton Tramway Co. Ltd., and Commonmealth Railways freight cars for stations beyond Quorn must not be loaded in excess of the capacity shown on each car. Silverton Tramway Co. Ltd. "G" class freight cars must not, in any circuntstances be loaded for stations beyond Quorn. "Car No. 31--Hand-brake" Not to be Used in Shunting.--The hand-break on Car31, which is operated by a wheel situated on the observation end platform is provided for holding the car when stationary, and must not be used for shunt purposes. "Posts for Placing Electric Staff Hoops On." - Posts painted White, equipped with hooks, are erected opposite the Automatic Electric Staff instrument cabins ,'At : Ucolta. ........ Down and Up Lines. Oulina .. Down and UP Lines Nantabibbie .... Down and Up Lines. McDonadls Hill Down and Up Lines Winniminnie .... Down and UP Lines. Outalpa ....Passing Siding'. Firemen must hang the hoop with the electric staff attached on the hook as the Train passes, and Enginemen must regulate the speed of their trains to enalble this to be done TEROWIE TO QUORN LINE. STEAM WORKING ORDERS "Terowie."--Shunting in New Transfer Yard.--When shuntiug over the broad Gauge line, which is known as the Ammo Dump Road and which crosses over narrow-gauge at the North end of the new yard, it will be the responsibility of the broad-gauge engine to see the line is clear of any narrow gauge movement before proceeding in either direction over the intersection of the Broad and narrow-gauge lines and to advise the narrow gauge Shunter regarding the movement to be made if narrow-gauge engine is shunting in the vicinity at the same time. "Speed of trains." --Broad and narrow-gange passenger trains must approach the Platform at 4 m.p.h. to enable axle boxes to be examined. "MilI Siding."--Class "T" engines must not work over the Mill Siding. "Coal Gantry." The movement of all engines to and from the/gantry must be under the direction of the Chargeman. All cars being handled at this depot must have the doors closed before the cars are moved. The Chargeman mast see that fill coal or other obstructions are cleared from the track befaore engines are moved in any direction. The Chargeman must operate the coal chute. The Engineman and must not operate this chute. Unauthorized employees or other persons must not be permitted to operate or interfere with the working of the coal gantry, and all defects or irregularitics must be immediately brought under the notice of the Loco Foreman, Terowie "Stop" Board for Freight Trains." --A "Stop" board having the following Words "Frelght trains stop and wait for hand-signal from Shunter" is errected on The Engineman's left approaching Terowie from Peterborough adjacent to the first "UP" Main facing switches. All "Up" freight trains must stop at this Board and wait for a hand signal from the Shunter before proceeding. "Shunting in The old Transfer Yard."- Before making any shunting movement over the broad gauge cattle transfer Line which will foul the narrow gauge line leadling to the narrow-gauge cattle transfer siding at the northern end of the transfer yard, shunter in charge of the broad-gauge movement must see that the narrow gaugee line is clear and that a narrow-gauge movement is not being made over the intersection of the broad and narrow-gauges. If narrow-gauge movements are being made in the vircinity , the broad-gauge shunter must advise the narrow-gauge shunter of the nlovement that he proposes to make. "Transfer Yard--Subsidiary Automatic Electric Staff Working." A susidery Automatic electric staff instrument is located in a shelter located adjacent to the "Down" facing" switches leading to the new transfer yard at Terowie. Train Control and local circuit telephones are provided in the shelter "To enter tbe transfer yard the Fireman must release the switches" operating staff drawer lock. When the train is in clear of the trailing switch The Guard must re-set the switches to normal and place staff in subsidiary instrument , record same and advise Control of his arrival. DEPARTING FROM TRANSFER YARDS TEROWIE 436 "To depart from the transfer yard the Guard must," After obtaining permission from Control, obtain the Staff from the subsidiary instrument, record same, and release the switchcs by operating the staff drawer lock. When the train is on the main Line clear of the trailing switches he must reset the switches normal and hand staff to the Engineman. "Terowie Shunting in Old Transfer Yard."--Before making any shunting movement over the broad-gauge cattle transfer line which will foul the narrow-gauge line leading to the narrow-gauge cattle transfer siding at the northern ,end of the old transfer yard, the shunter in charge of the broad -gauge movement must see that the narrow-gange line is clear and that a narrow gauge movement is not being made over the intersection of the broad and narrow-gauges. If narrow-gauge movements are being made in the vicinity, the broad-gauge shunter must advise the narrow-gauge shnnter of the movements he proposes to make. TARIN ORDERS ON ENTERING PETERBOROUGH (Steam) "Peterborough.--To admit trains":--Before operating the signals to admit a train. the Signalman must first ascertain from the Yardmaster the line on which the train is to be admitted and to see that all swltches are correctly set and locked for snch line. After giving this permission the Yardmaster must not permit any shunting movement which will foul the line for the incoming train. "To Dispatch a Train,The Yardmaster must" Advise the Signalman of lhe line over which the train is to travel, and prevent any shunting movements which will foul such line. The Signalman must see that the switches are correctly set and locked. When the line is correctly set and secured, The employee fit the east or west end as the case may be, will so advise the Station Master by telephone, or if the Station Master be near at hand, by verbal intimation. "Protecting Mill Street Crossing."--A gong and two warning boards are installed at this crossing. The warning boards are operated by a ground lever located 30 yards on the station side of the crossing and the words "Stop Train Coming" are painted on the boards. For trains from Terowie and Ucolta, the gong is operated by the passage of the train and by the reversing of the lever controlling the warning boards. For trains to Ucolta and Terowie the gong is operated by the reversing of the Lever controlling the warning boards. The ground lever must be reversed for all movements (including shunting) over the crossing, so that the gong will operate for 30 seconds before the train arrives and during its passage over the crossing. "Livestock Washout Sidings."--The switches operating these sidings lead from The Port Pirie Main line, and are equipped with a staff drawer Lock. "Engines to or from Loco. Depot." 1." All engine and shunting movements to and from the Loco Depot must be made over the line protected by the derail. 2. Engines fiom the east end of the yard before proceeding to Loco Depot must come to a stand opposite to the passenger station, and after receiving instructions from the Yard Master, subsequently proceed on a hand signal from the employee at the west end of the yard. 3. Before signalling an engine to proceed from the yard to the Loco depot, the employee in charge of the west end of the yard must see that all switches are correctly set, that the derail is "off," and that the Lines are clear. 4. Engines proceeding from the Loco Depot to yard must come to a stand before reaching the derail, and await a hand signal from the employee in charge of the west end of the yard. Before giving such signal the employee must remove the derail and see that the lines are clear and switches correctly set for the movement. 5. Switches No. 72 must be kept set and locked for the crossover,except when in actual use during shunting. 6. Before a train is despatched on the Port Pirie or Quorn main lines, or the signals are cleared to admit up trains from these lines, the employee must see that switches No. 72 are set for the crossover and locked, also that the derail is "on" and locked, and that no movement to or from the Loco Depot is taking place. "Loud-Speaking Equipment." Loud-speaking equipment is installed at Peterborough Station and Yard in the following positions :-- 1. Ticket Office :--Amplifier, control box and microphone. 2. Loud-speakers at : A. East End Yard: Two loud-speakers located on adjacent poles approximately 80ft. east of the carriage shed. B. West End Yard: One loud-speaker located on pole approximately 120ft. East of Hurlestone Street crossing. C. Station.--One loud-speaker located on pole near Refreshment Rooms, covering the platform area. D. One loud-speaker in the Refreshment Room. One loud-speaker in the Liquor Bar. 427 SPEAKER ANOUNCEMENTS Annonncements may be made to any combination of circuits simultaneously by operating tim keys of the Keys concerned. Yard telephones are located at poinls adjcent to the loud speakers. The Station Clerk is responsible for the correct operation of lhe equipment. The microphone will be used by the Station Master, Yards,Master, or Station Clerk, or authorized employee directed to make announcements when it is not convenient for Officers to use the microphone. "Method of Operation" Announcements must be made in a clear voice with the mouth not more than l0ins from the microphone, speaking slowly with a slight pause between each word and excluding other noises in the vicinity of the microphone. Each call must be preceded hy the word "Anmmncement" followed by "Calling East End" or "West End," as the case may be; Then the name of the yardmaster Shunter or other employee to whom the message is addressed. Instructions must be brief and dearly expressed. If an aknowledment is required, the fact must be stated and will terminate the message. If the call is of an urgent nature, the caller must call "Urgent" after the word , Announcement. When an acknowledgment is required, The employee addressed must imedialely proceed to the nearest circuit lelephone, communicate with the Ticket Office and acknowledge the message received by repeating it and seek further instructions if necessary. Acknowledgments of a general nalure, such as "OK Received that call," are not permitted. The message must be repeated to avoid misunderstandings. Calls requiring an acknowledgment must be repeated within a reasonable time, if no respons has been received. Calls ever the loud speakers must not he addressed to engine crews. An Engineman must not act on any loud speaker announcement but await the direction of shunter. The loud Speaker equipment must be used for : A. Calling the Yardmaster to speak on file Telephone. B. Advising the Yard Staff of (1) The departure time hi' "UP" trains from Yongala Minvalara, Black Rock or Orroroo and Ucolta (2) The departure time of "Down" trains from Terowie or Gumbowie. C. Advising the Yard Staff of any emergency which may arise in connncection with train movements. D. Calling the Trnin Examiner or other employees should their services be urgently required. E. Announce on arrival of passenger or mixed trains on station and refreshment room loud speakers, The Station Name : Cahng for various branch lines ; time allowed for refreshments. F. Anounce three minutes before , the departure time of passenger trains on the station loud speaker .. (give deslination) will be leaving in three minutes request passengers to board the train. Immediately afterwards. for the information of branch line passengers announce the departure Times of the various branch line trains. G. Announce when The passenger or mixed Trains are running late to waiting passengers The use of this equipment must be strictly confined to essential railway business and must not bee used for any other purpose. Care must be exercised to avoid annoyance to residents in the neibhour hood by the excessive or unnecessary use of the loud-speaking equipment. The strength of the signals must be modulated accordingly. Lengthy announcements to employees must be avoided by calling the employees required over the loud speaker to call the nearest telephone. The Train Controller, Peterborough must advise the Station Clerk of the departure time of trains from Yongala, Minvalara, Black Rock or Orroroo, Ucolta and Terowie. The Hurlstone Street Crossing The employee in charge of the west end of the Yard must protect the Hurlestone Street Level Crossing, in accordance with the Rules. Shunting over Hurlestone Street Level Crossing during shunting operations, Enginemen must give one (1) short whistle when approaching The HurLstone Street level Crossinig and, before crossing over, must obtain a signal from The Crossing Keeper: The warning whistle for level crossings, as provided for in Rule 192 must not be sounded by the shunt engines at this crossing. 438 Lavatory Cars "Cars Fouling Platforms"- The 60ft. lavatory bogie cars must not be shunted past the Freight Platforms. "Speed of Engines"- Engines entering the Station Yard must not exceed a speed of 15 (fifteen) miles per hour. "Sheep and Cattle Yards"- The switches operating this siding lead from the Cockburn main Line and are equipped with a staff drawer lock. "Siding near Mill Street"- Vehicles must not be left standing on siding adjacent to Cockburn and Terowie main line between the Mill Street Crossing, and the notice board approximately 50 .yards on the station side of the crossing. "Mill Siding"- Fly shunting or kicking off to or from the Mill Siding is forbidden The Employee in charge of the shunting must protect the crossing for road traffic. "Quorn" - Engine repairs and coaling at: - Engineman are advised that the booking of repairs to locomotives at Quorn must be restricted to items that are absolutlely necessary, and thus avoid extra cost to this Department. This instruction also appLies to obtaining coal at Quorn, and Enginemen should only take sufficient coal at Quorn to enable them to reach Peterborough with safety, taking into consideration the class of train they are to work.
