EXPLORE PETERBOROUGH SOUTH AUSTRALIA (extract from Flinders News) Location in the Mid North of South Australia The Peterborough Tourism Association have estimated that over 500,000 tourists pass through Peterborough annually. Many of these tourists use the town as a "jumping-off point" prior to travelling to other destinations such as Arkaroola, Wilpena Pound and other beauty spots, using the opportunity to grab a quick feed and re-fuel,giving Peterborough a cursory inspection before heading off on their travels. More recently a greater number have opted to stay and take in the history and sights of Peterborough, a town that has seen great days, diminished in size, and currently staging a recovery. Most visitors to Peterborough are attracted by the lure of Steam Trains, and the town's working museum Steam Town, which currently operates on the former Quorn Narrow Gauge line. Manned by volunteers with a love of railways,Steam Town tourist trains travel to Black Rock, Orroroo and Eurelia on a regular basis during the winter months ,when there are no Fire Bans. A feature of the journey is a stopover at the old Black Rock Hotel, now renamed Black Rock Art and Coffee Place , serving tees, coffees and light meals. The Steamtown premises on the Port Pirie side of town are a living, working reminder of days gone by, with a number of engines and carriages on display. It is also the site of the Roundhouse, "Three Gauge Turntable" and the old "break of gauge" where three different gauges of railways once met. Such are Peterborough's links vith the railways that the Tourist office is based in a beautifully-restored carriage from the original "Ghan" that travelled from Adelaide to Alice Springs. South Australia's only operating Gold Battery, which crushed ore from Waukaringa,Teetulpa and Mount Grainger goldfields,is located in Peterborough and visitors may arrange inspection through the Tourist Office. Visitors to Peterborough are frequently impressed by the grand scale of many of the buildings, which include the beautiful town hall, and the quaint shops many of which date back to the Victorian era. St. Cecelia, an Edwardian Mansion built in 1912 by the then Bishop of Port Augusta, Bishop John Norton, as his private residence is an example of some of the fine architecture to be found in Peterborough and how important Peterborough once was as a centre of the Catholic faith. It is currently operated as a bed and breakfast and hosts murder mysteries on a regular basis, and is said to be haunted by the ghost of Bishop Norton, who finds it hard to leave his beloved home even in death. The nearby church, St Anacletus, designed by Bishop Norton, was designated a Procathedral in 1906 and, apart from its beautiful Gothic style and stained glass windows, curiously is said to boast the only lavatory ever to be designed by a Catholic Bishop. Peterborough boasts two fine museums, Ley's museum in Queen Street, and Eric Rann's museum in Moscow Street, the latter with a fine display of sta- tionary motors. Both museums are worthy of inspection, and viewing can be arranged by contacting the operators. Visitors with an urge to"ruin a good walk by chasing a little white ball" will find two challenging golf courses, with an 18 hole course in Peterborough, and a picturesque nine- hole course at Morgan East, eight kilo- metres from town on the Dawson road. During Summer, a high quality swimming pool is available, located next to the Caravan Park, and beautiful Victoria Park. Day trippere are also able to take in the historic towns of Orroroo, Terowie, Pekina and Yongala all within close proximity. The much-famed "Magnetic Hill" where cars seemingly roll uphill is a must see, as is the Dares Hill Scenic Drive which runs between Terowie and Hallet, visit the old Railway town of Terowie, with its old Railway Station and Historic platform with its broad gauge track still intact Numerous small Ghost Towns such as Dawson,Lancelot and Gumbowie also dot the landscape. Well-served by motels, hotels and a fine caravan park, visitors would have no trouble finding accomodation for an extended stay. The town also features a wide choice of 'take-aways' and sit-down meals. Whether it's history, sport, painting, photography or plain old curiosity, Peterborough has it all.
