Historic journeys on the Pichi Richi Railway line Pichi Richi Railway runs historic steam trains on the oldest and most scenic section of the famous narrow-gauge "Ghan" line. Operation of the preserved railway commenced in 1974, and many thousands have taken a journey back in time on the Pichi Richi Railway. Easter will be a special celebration for the com- mencement of regular trains on the newly opened extension into Port Augusta. Opened by the Hon Joan Hall, Minister for Tourism last September, the line into Port Augusta will provide more options than ever for vis- itors to the Spencer Region. On Easter Saturday and Sunday only, trains will run from both ends of the line, meeting at Woolshed Flat. There are many options for passengers, who can travel the whole line, or change trains for a shorter journey. "Our patrons can now catch the Afghan Express from the historic Port Augusta Station, right in the Heart of town" said Richard Atkinson, President of Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society. "This will be a great boon for Port Augusta, and brings new opportunities for the City " On long weekends and selected days of school holi- days the "Pichi Richi Explorer" operates from Quorn to Woolshed Flat. This is ideal for families looking for a shorter journey. The historic "Bar Well Bull" diesel railcar runs on the second and fourth Sunday of each month from March to the end of November (unless a steam train runs). Pichi Richi Railway is truly an icon of the Outback. Until sealed roads came to the area, travel by the "Ghan" train was the most comfortable way to get to Alice Springs. Today you can re-live those days in the genuine carriages of the 1930's and earlier. Bookings for all trains can be made by calling the Booking Officer on 8658 1109. On train operating days call the Quorn Railway Station phone 8648 6598 for bookings or information. Extract from "The Flinders News"
