New Mexico Rail Passenger Alliance

GOALS OF THE ASSOCIATION

Our members have been actively promoting the improvement of rail service in New Mexico and the Southwest since the late 70's. The organization is dedicated to the preservation of the existing AMTRAK services in this area and:

• The improvement of operations for transcontinental trains through New Mexico; specifically, daily service in the southern part of the state served by THE SUNSET LIMITED.
• The conversion of all stations in New Mexico into local intermodal facilities.
• The introduction of an El Paso - Las Cruces - Albuquerque - Pueblo - Denver service connecting the routes of the SUNSET LIMITED, SOUTHWEST CHIEF and the ZEPHYR/DESERT WIND/PIONEER lines at Denver.
• The re-route of the SOUTHWEST CHIEF to serve Pueblo, Colorado and to enter Chicago on the more productive for passenger trains BN route. Both of these re-routes will become easier to implement after the BNSF merger takes place.
• The eventual re-route of the SUNSET and EAGLE services to operate via the BNSF between El Paso and Deming New Mexico in order to serve the 100,000 + population growing around Las Cruces, New Mexico's second largest urban area.
• A branch from the SOUTHWEST CHIEF serving Phoenix and Tucson and joining the main train at Williams Junction, Arizona.
