NEW!!! Smoke Rise Event, July 30th and 31st, 2005

Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia hosts an annual major model train event every summer. At the 2005 show, we once again combined our modules with the Chattanooga Model Railroaders and the Atlanta Interlocking Model Railroaders into a single large (!) setup. Photographer: Mike Deaton.

This is the view from the balcony, similar to the first picture from last year.
From the balcony, this shows the west end of the NGM portion.
A view from the east end of Carelton yard, looking west.
A view of the side looking at the Chatanooga section (grey skirts), and centered on Gary Farino's Autotrain terminal.
From the balcony, looking down on the Atlanta Interlocking's area, with the intermodal terminal in the foreground.
From the balcony, looking across the Atlanta Interlocking towards the Chatanooga section.
Ivan White and Stuart Lodge talking at Ivan's Wye between trains.
Young Engineer Chad Janicki takes a break from running trains to look at the Intermodal terminal.
Stuart Lodge takes a picture of an oncoming train.
James Deaton runs a train through Carleton Yard.
Bruce looks on as the modules based on the Atlanta Union station are explained.
Bryan Johnson and Stuart Lodge look on as a train runs through Ivan's Wye from the Interlocking area to NGM's on the way to the Chatanooga section.
A look along Gary Farino's Amtrak Autotrain terminal, based on the northern end in Virginia.

Smoke Rise Event, July 24th and 25th, 2004

Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia hosts an annual major model train event every summer. At the 2004 show, we combined our modules with the Chattanooga Model Railroaders and the Atlanta Interlocking Model Railroaders into a single large (!) setup. Photographer: Mike Deaton.

NEW: For addtional pictures of the 2004 show, see the Chattanooga Area Model Railroaders album.

This was the view from the DIspatcher's location on the balcony. Bob Slaughter is taking his turn at traffic control. Obscured by the railing is the NGM area. The large beige, unscenicked module is Ivan's T-Yard, used as a single-track connection from NGM to AIMR. Above and to the left is the Atlanta Interlocking Model Railroaders, whose portion you might recognize from "Model Railroader". To the right, with the grey skirting, are the Chattanooga Model Railroaders.
Similar to the one above, this gives a slightly different view..
This is from the right side of the balcony. You can just make out Jon Cook's two-track, four-span bridge module in the lower right hand corner. The TV set isn't for weekend sports; it's for one of the two train-cams we had running at the show.
This is a shot along Carleton Yard, the primary yard modules for NGM. The laughing person in the middle of the picture is our current President, Jon Cook, who is acting as Carleton yardmaster, working with the dispatcher to keep the number of trains at a proper level for the show.
This shows the west end of Carleton Yard, from above. Note the city scene, plus the number of trains in the yard, either waiting to run, or waiting to be taken off the layout. Carleton was one of 4 yards in the setup.
Scan of the track schematic for the 2004 show, showing all the mainlines.

Smoke Rise Event, July 27th and 28th, 2002

Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia hosts an annual major model train event every summer. At the 2002 show, we combined our modules with the Knoxville Area Model Railroaders and the Atlanta Interlocking Model Railroaders into a single large (!) setup. Photographer: Mike Deaton.

Here you can see the 'west' end of the NGM modules, with Ivan White's T-shaped yard modules in the foreground. In the background, the Atlanta Interlocking Model Railroaders' modules (the ones without skirting on them) can be seen.
This picture shows many of the NGM modules in the foreground. Along the right-hand side of the picture, towards the back, is Carlton Yard, our 32-foot long main yard. Further to the rear are the modules from the Knoxville Area Model Railroaders.
The third picture shows the modules linking the first two pictures. In the background are the modules at the front of the second picture, and the modules at the bottom connect with those at the bottom of the first picture. The rest of Ivan's T-yard can also be seen.

Gary Bechdol's Latest Free-Mo module: In Progress

This is Gary's fourth Free-Mo module, called "Church Street". They all represent a section of the Central of Georgia line. Photographer: Gary Bechdol

This image is a portion of a CofG val map showing the area the module represents. Only the turnout breaking from the main track is on this module; if I had tried to put the crossover to the right of it on this module the right hand turnout would have spanned the joint between modules, definitely a no-no. The crossover will instead be on an adjacent module. The 5' X 6' box culvert to the left of the main line turnout will be on a seperate module that will be keyed in to the present module.
This is the underside of the module showing the curved 1X2 side rail which adds stiffness to the module and provides support for the 1/4in luan subbase.
This is a top view of the west end showing the end plate cut to the cross section of the roadbed. Another module with an identically cut end plate will eventually mate against this end. The triangle is clamped to the end plate and bears against the luan subbase to ensure the plate is at a right angle to the subbase.
This is the west end with the rough cut foam subgrade/scenery base in place.
This is taken from the same vantage point as in the picture above but with the roadbed/scenery shaped on the south side. The 1X2 with coarse sandpaper is laid across the sides and used to bring the roadbed down to the correct elevation.
This is the module after it has the luan roadbed in place.
The fake fur "grass" has been glued to the scenery base.
The fake fur has been rough trimmed to size and colored using the marking pens in the foreground.
Aligning the short sections of track at the east end using an adjustable square to ensure the sections are perpendicular to the end plate. Expansion gaps will be used between the end sections and the longer intermediate sections of track to minimize the effects of expansion/contraction at the ends of the module.
Using the adjustable square to set the 1in offset from the face of the end plate.
The ties for the No. 10 curved turnout are in place. PC board ties are used for attaching the rails due to their ability to resist the expansion/contraction forces.

Point detail. Points, throwbar, and details were taken from a Central Valley turnout kit.
IT RUNS!!!
Wired DPDT pushbutton switch for turnout control. Two are required for each turnout, for operation from either side of the module.
DPDT pushbutton ready for insertion into fascia. Yes, it IS a Kodak film canister.
Turnout wiring. Turnout motor is to the right, pushbuttons are at top and bottom, and a bridge rectifier is at left. The accessory power buss has not yet been installed.
