RRBlueSign

The BLUE SIGN at railroad crossings is an Emergency Notification System (ENS) sign used to report dangerous situations, such as stalled vehicles, broken gates, or obstacles on the tracks. It contains a 24/7 emergency hotline number and a unique USDOT crossing identification number, allowing dispatchers to stop trains in the area.

Key details about the BLUE SIGN:

  • Purpose: It is designed to save lives by allowing for rapid reporting of emergencies directly to the railroad company, which can stop trains more quickly than calling 911 alone.

  • What it lists: The sign prominently displays a phone number and a specific, six-digit-plus-letter identification number that tells operators exactly where the crossing is located.

  • When to use it: Call the number if a vehicle is stuck on the tracks, if safety gates are malfunctioning, or if there is any obstruction blocking the path of the train.

  • Location: These signs are required at all public highway-rail grade crossings, usually found on the metal post holding the crossbuck sign or on a nearby signal pole.

  • Emergency Procedure: If your vehicle is stuck or stalled on the tracks, get everyone out immediately and move AWAY from the tracks, but in the direction of the oncoming train, to avoid debris.
Then, call the emergency number on the BLUE SIGN.
