Three of these railcars, more commonly known as the "Silver Fern", were introduced on the North Island Main Trunk in 1972 to replace the "Blue Streak" converted Fiats. They operated on the NIMT for some years until the present locomotive-hauled trains took over and were then transferred to new long-distance passenger services to Tauranga and Rotorua. Although the class never worked in the South Island in normal service, they have visited several times on charters. In recent years they have been used for suburban passenger runs.
