About This Site
This site maps the national public railway network of New Zealand. These are the lines which were operated by the NZ Government Railways and its successors the Railways Department, Railways Corporation, NZ Rail Ltd, Tranz Rail, Toll Rail and currently Kiwirail. Coverage incorporates all present and former routes including closed lines and those which have become heritage railways.
Updates
This site receives annual updates. This is limited to New Zealand content and is not as extensive as was the case prior to 2012. The next review of content is due in December 2012.
News relating to this site, as well as general transport, is posted in the Enzed Transport blog.
Find A Map
Maps are accessible in three different parts of this site. To find a map, you can use the following:
The Map Views section contains named map views which are made up of a number of individual files from the other two sections of the site mentioned below. These view files are the most convenient way of locating maps for a city, region, island, route name, or all of New Zealand.
You can get individual, editable files for all designated railway routes by browsing the NZ Railway Line Based Maps section of this site. This area also contains older versions of maps.
You can get individual, editable files for rail lines that are not connected with a named public route, such as some heritage railways, miniature railways, street tramways, or museums, in the NZ Location Based Maps section.
All maps can be downloaded to your computer and opened with Google Earth software, or you can view them as an overlay to the Google Maps website, or as an overlay of the topomap.co.nz website, using the links provided under the icon of each map. Map files downloaded from the Route Views section of the site will automatically contain the most up to date content that has been posted on this website.
Other Content & Updates
This site also includes a limited number of NZR curve and gradient diagrams, signalling and interlocking diagrams, international maps, photo maps (a map that loads photos from Picasaweb) and miscellaneous stuff..
