1920 by St. Louis Car Company
 This single
truck Birney Safety car was recently moved down from the museum after
many years of being in the Seattle area. The car still needs a truck and
running gear before it can operate again.
Birney cars were
very poplar. They were one of the first designs for single-man
operation. No conductors were necessary. The term "Safety"
was to give the public security that the lack of a conductor was not a
safety hazard. It was also one of the more standardized designs in the
industry, thus lowering costs. Many small operators from around the
nation purchased Birneys.
