Fresno Birney Safety Car
#74

Built: 1920 by St. Louis Car Company

fresno74-070402-02.jpg (361431 bytes)This single truck Birney Safety car was recently moved down from the museum after many years of being in the Seattle area. The car still needs a truck and running gear before it can operate again.

Birney cars were very poplar. They were one of the first designs for single-man operation. No conductors were necessary. The term "Safety" was to give the public security that the lack of a conductor was not a safety hazard. It was also one of the more standardized designs in the industry, thus lowering costs. Many small operators from around the nation purchased Birneys.
