The Trolley line
runs for six miles between Portland and Lake Oswego,
along the west side of the Willamette River.
The
northern terminus is located at Bancroft and Moody Streets. This is in
the
rapidly developing area called the South Waterfront District. There
are high-rise condos and offices in the process of development. The trolley terminal is
just 1 block south of the Portland Streetcar terminal. The OHSU Tram
is just a 10 minute walk from the Trolley as well.
From the northern terminal the Trolley travels
south. Modern office buildings,
restaurants and condominiums are found in the elegant
Johns Landing area. The Trolley passes through the center
of these attractive developments as it continues south
before skirting Willamette Park. There are boat
moorage's, marinas and considerable boating activity in
good weather.
South of the
Sellwood Bridge the Trolley skirts Powers Marine Park and
then enters a wooded area, with the river seldom far from
view. Two high trestles, including the 686-foot long
Riverwood Trestle, provide spectacular views overlooking
the river and the east side. The track continues through
the 1,396-foot long Elk Rock Tunnel and makes a gradual
"S" curve between the portals, creating almost
total darkness at midpoint.
The line
continues south through the woods and crosses another
short bridge as it wends its way to Lake Oswego. The
trolley track then meets the rails of the Portland &
Western Railroad and parallels them for the last half
mile, to the trolley depot on State Street in downtown
Lake Oswego.
