Yonge Street
(pronounced; young)

The danger of this busy level crossing is evident in this 1913 photo as CPR 2223 backs over it while a large crowd heads for the ferry dock. The tender is piled high with coal indicating it is just off the shop track and will soon head forward to the old union station for its train. This G1 class 4-6-2, was the newest type of passenger engine. (MLW #49484 2/11 as 1023, renumbered 2223 5/13). In later years it was assigned to Lambton roundhouse for freight service and lasted almost until the end of steam being retired 2/59 after 48 years! During that time it was modernized with a vestibule cab and other features but remained hand-fired.

Former Great Western station houses Toronto Wholesale Fruit Terminal.

Note the steam roller!

Another angle of the early work going on.

These two views looking west clearly show the difficulties faced maintaining access to Union Station while the work goes on.

Arriving CNR passenger train with porter on rear platform. Note CNR freight train on the High Line far left. Looking west.

NOTE: The subway opened August 29, 1930.
