Buchans Railway

American Smelting and Refining Company ASARCO

R.L.Kennedy

Buchans Mining Company was a subsidiary of American Smelting and Refining Company, an American company. It operated base metal (copper, zinc etc.) mines beginning with 500 tons per day and soon increasing to 1,250 tons. By 1967 annual production was about 380,00 tons however, the mines closed in 1978 when the ore ran out. In 1928 it built a 19 mile narrow gauge (42") railway in Newfoundland between Buchans and Buchans Junction where it connected with the Millertown Railway. The Buchans Railway was abandoned June 30, 1977.
