May 1, 2012 Marked the 12th Anniversary of this website.
It began with the story linked below.

50th Anniversary May 1st 1960

YOUR Contribution

The success of this website is due in part to the many contributors who have donated images or writing. About 90% of these contributors are known only through the internet yet they have willingly donated towards the web site. Thank you one and all.

Your contribution is welcome. Be it one image scan or a short story, or a feature article. Anything Canadian is welcome. The majority of the feature articles are Canadian Pacific Railway simply because I have the most resources including contacts due to my interest over more than forty years of railroading on the CPR. Other Canadian railways are welcome.

Articles

CP Ships BCCS Added three photos (scroll to bottom) showing Vancouver wharves and three CP ships.

CPR Algoma District

Sudbury locomotive and train gallery. Added P2 class 5455 at Chalk River shop track.

CPR Ontario District

Bruce Division Passenger service. Camp Borden

Added interesting photo of Bog Road a forgotten station in Camp Borden. Scene set in World War Two with G3 2332 a passenger engine equipped to operate over NYC between Welland and Buffalo where it normally ran to. Where the train was actually headed to has been lost to time. The engine may have simply been what was available at John Street at the time.

CPR Subsidiaries

Quebec Central added photo of G2 2556.

Photographs

Trains

CNR steam

This interesting scene is marred by the fungus on the slide. Many of Jim Parker's old slides are likewise damaged and some are unusable. Others can be fixed a little by cropping or Photoshop reworking by my friend and associate David Bridge. I am making an exception and including this because of its interesting scene of activity. Just imagine it is autumn leaves falling. It works for me!

CPR Diesel (scroll down to CP Rail thumbnails)

Added two scenic views of time card freight powered by a trio of FM diesels in familiar territory.
Contributed by Keith Hansen. More of his CLC power added in Locomotive Galleries.

Locomotives

Phone number on the truck door would become famous two years later for an entirely different reason!

CNR old diesels. New gallery for MLW S-2 and S-4 yard switchers starting with 7985 and 8132. What is interesting is that this is the same diesel! The two slides are ten and one half years apart. Also, added photo (scroll down to bottom CP Rail section) of fictional AM Road diesels in the 1976 thriller-comedy movie Silver Streak. I happened upon some of the filming at Union Station while walking through there to John Street and noticed the lead unit in the scene was displaying red markers instead of unlit classification lights. (You can see this in the wreck scene where the diesel crashed through the wall into the waiting room. Actually, it was a truck mockup!) I thought of asking the director if he had a railway technical advisor and if so, ask him if he saw anything wrong with the scene. If he said no, fire him! But, I was in a hurry and didn't bother. Maybe I could have made some money as an "expert" advisor, or at least got a movie pass!

Locomotives

CNR steam 0-8-0's added 8384.

CPR vans added (scroll down) two old vans 7168 and 7322 in yellow CP Rail Multimark paint scheme. By this time wood vans got a covering of plywood sheeting over the tongue and groove during overhauls. It was supposed to be a cheaper method since tongue and groove is expensive and labour intensive to repair during the normal seven year overhaul. However, water got in behind the plywood and increased rot! So much for that idea!

ETR added photo of two vans both numbered 54! This was a replacement of an old caboose with a newer secondhand one. New contributor Tim Vermande www.vermande.us

NS finally gave up this perpetual right in 2011 due primarily to loss of most traffic. A fleet of 22 GMD F7A units lasted until late years and one (1189) is preserved and operated in Monticello, IL while another (671) is preserved in Bellevue, Ohio.

Delaware & Hudson added three old black and white photos (scroll down) of RS-3's on passenger at Montreal West. Trains

CNR steam added a nice colour photo showing some famous Massey-Harris farm machines loaded on flat cars. This was back in The Good Old Days. No, not the steam era (which it was) rather, the days when things were manufactured in Canada!

CPR old diesel added old black & white photo of 4059 about to leave Alyth Yard with empty stock cars months before it was regeared for The Canadian soon to be inaugurated. I don't usually include links to other sites in captions but made an exception here to tell the story of Pat Burns, a famous Canadian. Thanks to Doug Phillips for detailed description and also to Ron Visockis for digitally restoring the old image.

Also, scenic view of The Allouette eastbound from Ottawa near Vaudreuil, a mini-streamliner with a Skyline Scenic Dome and hauled by a MLW covered wagon. Another pair of similar trains were The Rideau, both were shortly discontinued. By this time the CPR didn't even bother waiting for the next change of public time table to cut off passenger trains.

Locomotives

CNR US lines, steam. Central Vermont added builders photo of 4-8-2 602. Note coal pusher on tender. This power operated device pushed the rear plate upward to bring coal closer to fireman on these hand-fired engines. Engines this size were really too big to be hand fired. CPR 5000 P1 2-8-2's were also built with this device. It was not all that successful and the engines were later equipped with mechanical stokers. One of the problems with the piston was it would get stuck in forward position likely due to fine coal getting in it. The CPR at Lambton would spot the tender under the roundhouse door and jack it back down. Sometimes they jacked up the doorway instead! Many doors were damaged this way and fixed up while another was chosen to use until it too broke!

Grand Trunk Eastern added three 0-6-0's 7475 in Maine, 7528 in Vermont and 7529 in New York. 7475 and three other 0-6-0's were sold 11/59 at the end of steam to Buffalo Sash Co. Why? It is unlikely their plant was big enough to require their own locomotive let alone four! Possibly they were acquired as stationary boilers plus spares.
7528 wound up in the famous Paulsen Spence collection.

Logging BC diesels added an old colour image of an old BCFP Whitcomb with unfinished paint job on Vancouver Island.
New contributor Paul J. Crozier Smith

Industrial steam BC added rare Heisler at Pacific Coast Terminal. Normally used on logging railways, as was this one originally, there were not all that common in Canada. Climax was another rare type. Shay geared engines were the most common logging "lokey".
